Will the device tell me if I have Breast Cancer?

Crucially, Breastlight is not a diagnostic device so in the event that you discovered a Breast abnormality by using it the most important thing is not to panic and seek advice from your GP at the earliest opportunity for diagnosis. An abnormality detected using Breastlight may turn out to be something harmless but the fact that it has been detected gives you the earliest opportunity to solve the issue should it be something more sinister.

What if I don’t find anything or am unsure about what I have found?

If in any doubt whatsoever about the results of using Breastlight seek the support of a medical professional such as your GP.

Is the device safe to use?

Breastlight uses harmless LED lights which shine at high intensity to illuminate the breast giving you a translucent effect which allows you to spot abnormalities easily.

How does it work?

Breastlight Explained

Lens: The lens should be placed firmly against the breast which will allow the 3 harmless LED lights to intensify giving you a translucent view of your breast. If the lens is not in full contact with the skin tissue then the light may not intensify. For hygiene reasons we would advise to wipe the lens clean after each use using a dry tissue or moist cloth.

Display Panel: There are 4 symbols on the display which are a ‘days since last use’ indicator, a brightness intensity indicator and a battery life indicator.

Brightness Adjustment: Breastlight can be used on all skin colours and sizes but the light intensity may need to be adjusted to suit your size and colour. Simply press this button to scroll through the 4 brightness settings to find the one that suits you the best. This is indicated on the digital display.

Days Since Last Use indicator: There is no set pattern or timeline for using Breastlight but this handy indicator will allow you to see instantly how many days it is since you last used the device. This will assist you should you find an issue by giving your GP a timeline on how long it has been between your breasts being normal and since you spotted an issue.

Rechargeable Battery; Breastlight is rechargeable meaning no additional battery costs. The Battery charge symbol shown on the digital display advises the user how much battery life is left in the device.

What to look for

As with a standard Breast self-examination, what you are looking for is anything out of the ordinary – see our Breast Awareness section for more details.

Breastlight’s powerful red light will penetrate through the Breast tissue and should reveal shadow lines which are the veins and blood vessels carrying blood normally throughout the breast itself. You may also see a circle of small dots around the nipple – these are part of your mammary glands and are also completely normal.

However, if you notice a dark cluster/dark mass then it is possible that these areas are abnormalities in the breast and should be assessed without delay by a medical professional such as a GP. Whilst Breastlight is not a diagnostic device, it can act as a trigger to motivate the user to seek medical support sooner rather than later enhancing the chance of successful treatment in the event that the issue turns out to be a serious one.

Best Practice

We designed Breastlight to be a simple and easy to use product. For best results follow our 3 step guide.

Step 1 - Turn off the lights

Breastlight works best in a darkened room – so close the curtains and switch off the lights. The darker the room; the better the results

Step 2 - Make yourself comfortable

If possible stand or sit in front of a mirror. This will allow you the best possible view of what is going on inside your breasts. We recommend using a water based lubricant on your breast which (when applied over the whole breast) will allow Breastlight to glide over your breast easily.

Step 3 - Let the light in

Switch on your Breastlight and apply it firmly to your breast. Upon contacting the skin the light level will intensify revealing an internal view of your breast and its functions. Guide Breastlight around your breast tissue making sure to cover all areas including those nearest to your armpit and shoulder. Whilst the veins and vessels should reveal themselves as shadow lines channelling blood flow through the breast, any abnormalities should show themselves as dark clusters – see our breast awareness section for more details.
