Adenovirus has a worldwide distribution and is widely spread in the environment. Epidemics mainly occur at the end of winter, in spring, and early summer. It can affect individuals of all ages, but it is more frequently observed in young children. The clinical presentation is usually mild but can be more severe in immunocompromised individuals.
Adenovirus is easily transmitted through contaminated hands and contact with any infected surface or object, including contaminated water.
The incubation period of the virus is 8-10 days.
Symptoms
Diarrhea (main symptom) lasting approximately 7-8 days.
Mild vomiting appears 1-2 days after diarrhea in 80% of cases.
Fever occurs in 40-90% of cases, lasting 2-3 days.
Severe dehydration is rare.
Treatment is symptomatic and includes the administration of antipyretics and fluid/electrolyte replacement. Adhering to general hygiene measures is crucial to prevent the virus's transmission.
